Just got back from a week involved with this hotel. Most notably 'Mayan Divers'. We had rented a house in nearby Turtle Crossing and needed a dive shop close and not in the congested ( in a relative term) West End area.
They came recommended by locals and we found them to be outstanding and taking a safety first approach. We ended up getting PADI certified as Open Water divers and had tons of fun even though the weather had some intense rain. We ended up doing a total of 6 dives with our deepest at 60 and 70 feet.
Interaction with hotel and their staff was great. They have recently had a change with their General Manager and the staff morale and service has improved exponentially from what we gleaned. They are finally tiling areas that were formerly concrete circles in the bar area which makes it much classier and relaxed but still with good local flavour.
The day we were leaving was the day that the President of Honduras was coming to stay for a bit at this hotel. They must be doing something right.
Make sure you have a Monkey-Lala cocktail at the bar - tried it at lots of other places on the island and here serves the best.
If we were to stay in a hotel on the island and not rent a house, this would be our pick.

The Mayan princess is a gorgeous beach front resort in the west bay. The hotel grounds are very well kept with lots of flowers, a large pool, and beachfront restaurant. the rooms are quite large, too, with central air conditioning, a balcony, breakfast area, and fully equipped kitchen. the bathroom was very nice with glass blocks dividing the shower from the living room.
The dive center, Mayan Divers, is small but very well run. Anja and Liber are quite experienced and both very sweet. Anja took great care in my boyfriend who got his feet wet for the first time! The boat runs well and they have awesome fresh fruit (mm... coconut!) aboard every time.
We experienced one black out which lasted longer than we were told, unfortunately, however it was only one for the entire week we were there. the hotel had candles and matches delivered to our rooms which came in handy, however, I still cut my finger navigating through the hotel room in the dark!
The Caliente Cafe/Restaurant at the Mayan princess is rather expensive compared to other locations. My boyfriend and I went to The Lighthouse on the west end three times. The restaurant at Las Rocas is also quite good, and less expensive than at Caliente. The wait service all over the island, however, is great and the staff is very nice.
Breakfast buffet at the Mayan Princess runs notoriously late, so don't rush out to get food before your 8am dive. Mario is a waiter there and he speaks great English as he went to high school in LA!
We did have some snafu's with the front desk, although overall, they were all very kind and helpful.
Definitely a VERY memorable trip, and we're contemplating the next time we can go back...

My Name is Elsa and I am Honduran, but live up in Texas 15 years ago. This was my first trip to my country after all that time and had been waiting for it for the past 6 months. When I found the Mayan Princess online I had to stay here they have a very nice online reservation system that made it easy to book. I chose a dive package since both of my sons dive, they say that Anja & Liber were great and enjoyed every dive. The people of front desk were great since we came in they had our room ready and the check-in was fast, I believe that there supervisor took us to our room and it was just what I had expected. I enjoyed my week trip people in the restaurant were great and they pampered us like royalty.
The power went 2 times but they generator kicked in about 10 minutes.
We had a great time and we recommend this resort.

First let me say, the staff at Mayan Divers helped make my vacation one of the most memorable and enjoyable vacations I have ever had. I became certified open water on Christmas Day, what a great present, and, like the previous poster, took 6 dives, it was excellent. Thanks again Leif, Anja, Lieber, Randolf, and especially my instructor Sophie. The property itself is beautiful, and the resort staff is really helpful. Sure there are a few little issues, but remember you are in Central America, so just slow down and lighten up, bring lots of small denomination tip money, you may have a problem breaking bigger bills i.e $20.00/50.00/100.00. I never had a bug problem, but then again I sprayed my exposed skin with "deep woods off". The food was o.k. maybe a little pricey, but not unreasonable, Happy Hour was from four to seven I believe-2 for 1 drink. They have a great beach, they rake it every morning. Our weather was perfect. As for the other travelers with issues, maybe they should remember the poverty they drove through near Coxen Hole and think about how blessed they really are, but that’s just my opinion.
Mayan Divers are first class! Loved them!

My husband and I are both avid scuba divers and just spent a week at the Mayan Princess hotel in Roatan where Mayan Divers is based. We really think it was one of the best, if not the best dive operator we have ever used. There are so many reasons; first, the quality of the dives was great, amazing multiple canyon formations underwater with tight squeezes and great views and tons of sea life. They never put more than 10 people on a boat and when they do that they divide it into 2 different groups so you're never crowded in a big group; its small so they get to know you, Anja and Vera are amazing spotters of fish, octopus, etc., the dives are all close, 5 to 25 minutes, so no long boat rides; the prices are very good (though I think this applies to Roatan in general), they actually will take not just your fins from you in the water but your BCD w/ tank to make it easier to climb out of the water. They change out your tanks for you in between your dives if you want them to. They were very professional friendly, funny and genuinely fun to be with and the diving was great. Can't recommend enough!

Anja, Vera.
I had a great time diving with you gals. You are two very professional, patient Instructors/dive leaders and you really know your dive sites. Vera, way to stick to your guns and take us to the eel garden for the night dive, it was great!
Thanks for everything. I'll be back!

Anja, Liber & Vera,
thank you for some great dives. Everything relaxing and fun! Thanks to Umberto for all your help with the equipment and on the boat. We're glad you don't have to "tap-tap" to get the motor to raise up! We had a great experience and will definitely dive with you again if we come back to Roatan.
We'll do without the earthquake next time!! Take care, Lora & Mike Finley. Littleton, Co.

We've been spoiled by Mayan Divers. No dive shop in Roatan surpasses the professionalism of their Staff and quality of their equipment. It will be difficult for us to vacation elsewhere now that Mayan divers has set the standard so high. On top of it all, we really love Liber and Anja. Dana & Michael Springs. San Diego, CA.

As usual you made our dive experience amazing! It neve ceases to amaze me how friendly and accomodating your entire crew is.How you find some of the things we see on the dives still escapes me. I see coral and you see scorpion fish and eels!
Thanks for another terrific trip!

We loved diving with Mayan Divers. Vera, Anja and Liber are just great. We are very careful about who we dive with and could not be more pleased! We came intending to "simply" dive, but we learned so much plus greatly improved our skills over the two weeks we dived with them. We will DEFINATELY dive with them again when we return to Roatan!

We did 11 dives with you over the last ten days and as expected it was amazing. On top of the beauty of the reefs and wreck dive, your respect for the reef and the environment is inspirational. It is difficult to dive elsewhere as Dane and I have come to expect this great respect from all divemasters from other locations, which nfortunately leads to disappoinment. We have never been with as a great team as you guys. We did 11 dives with you in 2005 where we built this expectation. So with 22 dives total with you we can confidently say that your team is worth having this great experience with.
We will definately see you again soon!

You guys are great! I just finished my Divemaster here, Yeah! I had a terrible experience with another shop and you all turned things around for me. I hope to continue with an Instructor program in a shop like yours, somewhere with positive, funny, professional people like you!
Thanks and happy diving!
